An Italian restaurant opened on our street this past summer. It's about 60 steps from our door. (Michael's so in love with our central location that he counts the steps to all our favorite destinations.)
Michael said most of the time he was here in the summer the restaurant was empty except for the owner sitting at the window table reading his paper. Luckily, the owner must have planned for the lean times and is still in business. It's not packed or anything, but there are usually a couple of other tables when we go.
Michael had dinner there a couple of times while down here working on getting the house finished. The first time I went was in early November and we both really enjoyed it. The food is delicious and the waitress was so sweet.
This is the first trip down since then and we walked over a couple of nights ago. When we walked in the table at the window was open. (We could see the owner was busy in the back cooking.)
I looked up as we walked in and caught the eye of the waitress. (There's just one so she's pretty much the hostess, waitress, sommelier, and, as it turns out, proprietress of the lost and found office.) . She smiled, turned and walked back to the kitchen. She came right back out and held out a flowered umbrella.
My flowered umbrella. She'd remembered us from two months previous and was glad to reunite me with my umbrella. (My favorite umbrella; I love this umbrella. It's been all over creation with me. I'd noticed it was missing but kept thinking in Texas: it must be in San Miguel, and when in San Miguel I'd think: It must have gotten shoved in some cabinet when we were packing the house back up after Phase I of construction...or maybe it's in Fort Worth in a bag I haven't checked...)
Anyway, I was thrilled she’d kept it and a little amazed she remembered whose it was.
We already liked this restaurant but it’s now officially 'our restaurant'. The waitresses name is Lupita. It’s not quite the ‘Cheers’ bar. Nobody knows our names yet, but they do know our faces and our umbrellas.
It’s a great start.
