February 27, 2020 - 167 - "Vaqueros for the Day"

Two bad hombres just home from the market with their
new Vaqueros hats.

Setting the Mood

First thing this morning I hooked my phone up to a speaker and blared "Back in the Saddle Again" by Gene Autry throughout the house.

Oddly enough, my housemates did not appreciate the charming, festive, and perfectly-timed song.

I think, considering the early hour, they would only have appreciated silence.  But, hey, you can't live your life pleasing others, right?

Put On The Feed Bag

Michael rustled us up some eggs, bacon, and flapjacks, and we wolfed them down so we could be on top of our Vaqueros game.

Time to Saddle Up and Move 'em Out

Beth, from Leisurely Country Horseback Riding  came and picked us up.  We drove out to the country and got to ride horses all morning.

The trails start at about 6400' above sea level and go up to around 6700'.  We rode through river beds, past a 300 year old Otomi shrine, to the very edges of canyons, through rocky corn fields where we learned they grow the 'three sisters' all together:  squash, corn, and beans.

The weather was ideal;  chilly as we started out, and warming to the low 70's with just a slight breeze.

The trails are on the land given by the government to local Indigenous populations.  They can use it to live, work, and grow crops on.

Two of the men of the village served as our trail guides.

I got kitted out with some chaps-things, so I wouldn't get poked by all the cacti on the trail.  One of the cowboys, Reyes, was also willing to sing songs in Spanish with me, and answer my questions about new  vocabulary words.  (What's the word for...trail?, What's the word for cantaloupe?...)

The women of one family in the village cooked us a delicious meal afterwards:  Slow cooked chicken, chile rellenos, rice, pinto beans, avocado salad, green beans, and a squash side dish.  This was accompanied by flour tortillas with homemade cheese in them, and homemade corn tortillas.  They made two kinds of juices to go with it; cantaloupe and watermelon.

Everything would have been delicious on most days...but after a few hours riding in the mountain air they tasted especially amazing.

May your horse be as sweet, your companions as pleasant, and the vittles as good, as mine today.

     Happy Trails, pard'ners!!!
