September 11, 2020 - 364 - "Extremists".

Garden Variety Extremism

I started this post with the idea of talking about how, just within a neighborhood or group of friends, you run into people who believe they have 'the answer' about things.  Whether it be religious, or political issues, or who does a better job of recycling.  Or whose banana nut bread recipe is better.

It boggles the mind to think of all the things we can find to disagree about.

Black and White Thinking

In the U.S. we've become such a country of extremists.  I tend to blame it on the 24-hour news stations.  They have to gin up some sort of controversy to cover up the fact that they aren't saying anything new.  They play on emotions, try to make out that 'the other side' are evil, when in reality 'the other side' is a myth they created.

But it appeals to people (on all sides of an issue) that are extremists.

ex-trem-ist -  a person who holds extreme or fanatical political or religious views, especially one who resorts to or advocates extreme action.

Two Meanings

I was just thinking of the problems in our own country.  The fact that critical thinking is no longer considered a good idea.

Then I noticed today's date, and I thought of the worldwide problem of extremists.

'We're right' and They're wrong', historically, has not let to good things.

Personally, I never met a banana nut bread that I didn't like.
