March 13, 2020 - 182 - "Pandemic Pandemonium"

A couple of people sitting in the lounge areas,
and four people in the actual concourse...all
in airport uniforms.

All's Quiet on the Flying Front

After a blissful couple of weeks pretending to be a lady of leisure in Mexico,  I came home yesterday.  I unpacked,  I repacked and went back to work today.

I had no idea what to expect.  Mainly it was just another day at the office...except for that pesky pandemic lurking around every corner.

Chicago O'Hare, on a Friday afternoon, in spring break season...was pretty much a ghost town.  I sent a video to Michael to show him that I, quite literally, heard crickets chirping in the concourse.

Quiet, But Weird

Other than the crickets, the main sound was the monitors in the terminal showing videos with information on how to prevent catching and spreading, the corona virus.

So it's a strange time to be working in an enclosed tube with a lot of people.  Okay, yes, this is always a strange set-up that's bound to yield a lot of weirdness per cootie and personality-filled square inch.

Today the strangeness was the hyper-awareness of anyone doing anything too crazy.  By 'Too Crazy", I mean:   someone coughing, clearing their throat, wearing a mask, not wearing a mask, a person giving a friendly pat on the back...or any kind of human contact, touching surfaces others might have touched, wearing gloves, not wearing gloves, and yes...breathing.

Existing on the planet today was all it took to set some people on edge.

Little was said...but everyone was watching.

And These Were The Calm Ones

The number of people booked on my three flights today was low yesterday...and got lower throughout the day.

Our first flight, for instance, had only 28 people in main cabin.  (The plane seats 138 in main cabin.)

These were the people who weren't worried enough to cancel their trips themselves.  I'm sure plenty of people had their plans canceled for them.  Our last leg of the day was from Chicago to Orlando.  Since Mickey and Minnie self-quarantined...this number kept dropping.

Life, As We Know It, Has been Cancelled

I heard through various sources throughout the day about school being canceled indefinitely in some states, and spring breaks extended indefinitely in others.

On the van to our hotel, we met a couple who'd just boarded a Norwegian Cruise ship.  They got on.  They unpacked.  They prepared to spend a lovely week aboard the ship...but then they were told to pack their stuff back up as the cruise was canceled.

At the hotel, we ran into a woman in the same boat...er...out of the same boat.  It was her daughter's birthday wish to go on a cruise with her mom...and that's what they were going to do.

Also, there were signs around the lobby of the hotel indicating the various things that weren't going to be happening.

Date for regular life to resume?

        To Be Determined.
