Boredom:  A Swift Kick in the Pants

The Good News Is...I Don't Bore Easily.

The Bad News Is...I got a bit bored today.

Embracing the Boring

Whenever I want to write bout being bored, I end up ruining the moment for myself by looking for quotes to back up my overall ho-hum state.

Basically, all of the quotes boil down to it being my own fault...

"Life is for living and working at.  If you find anything or anybody a bore,
the fault is in yourself."

-Queen Elizabeth I of England

I really wanted to just wallow in my own lack of motivation...but then these quotes gave me the swift kick in the pants that I needed:

"Boredom is the conviction that you can't change...the shriek of unused capacities."
-Saul Bellow

So I had to think:  What capacities am I not using?

     Answer:  Oh...only all of them.

---

I didn't feel like writing, didn't feel like reading, didn't feel like exercising...mainly I just felt like napping and looking in the fridge for something else to eat.

Then I read the stupid (i.e. effective) commentary on the subject that I put on the graphic above:

---

"Boredom is your mind and body's way of telling you you're not living up to your potential."

-Hal Sparks

---

As much as I hate to admit it...I know it's right.

I asked myself the 'what if' question that almost always ends any hopes of continuing to laze around feeling blah:

How would I feel if I went ahead and did my workout?

And, though I kept trying to lie to myself about it...I knew I'd feel much better.

---

Eventually, I tightened the laces on my sneakers, turned on my exercise playlist, and hit 'Start' on my Sweat app.

---

Now, here I am less than an hour later and my workouts are done (Arms and Recovery stretch).  I'm sweaty and energized and my mind is clear enough to finish this post.

And once again I tell myself:  I really should just get my workout done first thing in the morning.  It makes my whole day better.

Why do I ever put it off?

Daily Hits of Happy

-Workout got done...though it looked pretty iffy there for a while.
-While procrastinating on everything else, I worked through several steps in a book about finance by Ramit Sethi (that I've been putting off.  It suddenly looked appealing since it was not on my to list today.)
-I might get used to the new set up for my daily planner....someday.

---

"I've a great ambition to die of exhaustion rather than boredom."

-Thomas Carlyle

(Dang it!)
