June 5, 2020 - 266 - "Put Me In Coach"

Life Coaching

I watched some hilarious videos on YouTube spoofing Life Coaches.

I'm not saying they couldn't help.  Hell, I certainly believe in change and growth and having someone to lend a little perspective on your challenges surely could be helpful.  I guess I just wonder what you'd get from them that you couldn't get from reading books yourself, and trying things out yourself.

Accountability, I guess.  Maybe that's what I've built into this blog.  Not that anyone actually sifts through the random information in my weekly check-ins, but the fact that it's out there (no matter how limited the audience) makes me try to do better.

Each Life Is So Different

I guess I just wonder how someone could help you when goals and motivations are so personal.

I follow some people on YouTube channels that could probably be seen as life coaches of one kind or another.  But doing it that way I get to find people with a variety of skills and interests and learn from whichever one is doing what I want to do.

Also, how great is the life coach's life?  Most of the funny videos I saw centered around someone working as a Life Coach...who still lived at home with their parents, or slept on their sister's couch...who were depressed and living from paycheck to paycheck.

Lots of Empowering Phrases

What all those videos seem to have in common is that they sound like those motivational posters that hung in every office in the U.S.A. in the 90's.  You know the ones:  the mountain image with a quote about Teamwork.  The cat hanging from a ball of yarn exhorting you to 'Hang in There'.   Lots of cheery platitudes.

True Confessions:  I kind of liked those.  But, well, words to live by can be read in a book.
"A life coach does for the rest of your life what a personal trainer does for your health and fitness." -Elaine MacDonald

Selling Life Coaching

I suppose what's most interesting is that most of the ads are not saying:  Hire me as a coach.  I can turn your life around!

Mostly they seem to be selling becoming a Life Coach yourself.  It sounds like a pyramid scheme.  No one is really doing the coaching....they're just charging you to learn how to teach others to do the coaching, or well, to make money by selling the next level people on buying ebooks and courses, not on success and accomplishment, but on selling more ebooks and courses...about selling more ebooks and courses.

    It's a very weird thing.

Today's Quotes:

And How I Will Incorporate Them Into My Life...

---
"The things that you are passionate about are not random,
they are your calling."

-Fabienne Fredrickson

What I get out of this is that I can probably go from "zero to eight figures overnight" by indulging in my passion!   I probably need to buy an ebook and online courses to learn how to monetize my career as a pie connoisseur.

"Coaching isn't therapy.

It's product development, with you as the product."

-Judy Hehr

Okay, so, I guess I could write an ebook,
and develop online training to teach others to be me?
(A person who makes no money by spending inordinate amounts of
time writing stuff that few people read.
Fun for me...but lucrative or fun for anyone else?  Doubtful.)
Or, uh, sell coffee mugs with my face on them?
I'll be a great product!
