December 3, 2019 - 81 - "Matter Over Mind for the Win!"

Not Happening

So for the past two days I have attempted to move past this cold and have actually put on my work out clothes at some point in the day...

However...I maybe didn't work out as hard as I normally do.

Like, I just sort of wandered around the house rearranging stuff on table tops.  Then I stumbled back to the bedroom, kicked off my sneakers, and got back in bed.

At night I changed out of my work out clothes...and back into my jammies.

Committed to Exercise

I looked up my stats today in an attempt to remind myself who I was BC.  (Before Cold.)

I have been doing the Sweat app workouts for three and a half years and only taken breaks 4 times:   Once for a major trip, once for a pulled muscle in my back, once for wrist surgery, and now for this gnarly cold.

My point is: I'm pretty committed to getting the workouts done.  I've managed to squeeze in the challenging workout schedule during other vacations, through lesser injuries, holidays, and other (less-gnarly) colds.

Ignore The Head...Case

I've learned the secret to getting the workouts done is just to go with my original plan and ignore completely what my brain says in the moment.

Typically, I'll put on workout clothes, get out the equipment, set up the app, and press 'Start'.  (I have worked this into a habit and find my body will just lumber along, going with the plan...so long as I ignore my whiny brain completely.)

Still, most days there comes a point where I have to go through some version of this conversation:

Mind:  Hey!  I've got an idea!

Body:  I bet you do.

Mind:  Yeah, so like:  let's not work out today!   I don't feel like it.

Body:  Doesn't matter.  This is what we do.  If we don't get it in today we'll just have to double up on stuff tomorrow.

Mind:  Come on!!!  Just this once.  There's that book to read...  And...  Hey!  I know:  let's go get a snack and sit on the couch and read it!!!!  What do you say?  Just for today.

Body:   I'm dressed to work out.  I'm in the den.  All I've got to do is hit the Start button on the app and that's what I'm going to do. We'll probably feel better when it's over.  We always do.

Mind:  No we don't!

Body:  You always say that ahead of time, but then you want to take credit once we're done and go on and on about endorphins and discipline and crap.  I know better than to listen to you.  You never want to work out.

Mind:  Do too!

Body:  Do not.  Okay - now hush!   3 - 2- 1- I'm hitting 'Start'.

Mind:  Nooooooooooo!   (Body starts moving.)  Nooooo!!!  I HATE THIS!!!  Let's stop.  Let's stop let's stop let's stop let's stop let's stop let's stop let's stop let's stop let's stop...noooooo!!!!

Body:  (Just keeps going.)   It's not soooo bad.  Kind of feels good to move.  We can go slow...we just can't quit.

Mind:  Nooooooo!!!   Let's quit!!!!!   I hate this.    I hate it I hate it I hate it....  Let's STOP NOW!!!  NOOOOOOOO!!!!  THIS IS MISERY!!!!.....

Blah blah blah....   (And it pretty much keeps up some form of complaint for most of the workout.)

I just don't listen.  Like the Nike ad says:  I Just Do It.

Role Reversal

Suddenly, this past week it went like this:

Mind:  Guess we should work out today.  (Wondering why we're not dressed to work out yet.)

Body:  Nope.

Mind:  What?  You always want to work out.

Body:  Not really.  I just always want to get it over with.  But today:  Not gonna.

Mind:  Wouldn't you feel better if you just tried?

Body:  No.

Mind:  Seriously, you'd raise your temperature...might fight off some of these cooties.

Body:  Listen.  It doesn't matter what might happen if we worked out.  I'm telling you very clearly:  I CAN NOT DO IT.  Seriously.  I would if I could.  But the answer is no.

Mind:  Huh.  Now that you're holding me back, I think I kind of want to.

Body:  Then maybe you won't whine so much next time we can work out.

Mind:  Yeah, but, are you sure?  Studies show that....

Body:  Two words:  'not'  and 'happening.'  Capiche?

We Did It!

Finally today I got dressed to work out, went up to the den, got out the equipment...and it went like this:

Mind:  You sure we can do this?

Body:  I'm gonna try.

Mind:  Well...okay, but...come to think of it...maybe one more day off would...

Body:  Shut up.  We're doing it.  (Hits 'Start' and begins the workout.)

Mind:  I guess this isn't SOOOOO bad.  At least we can lie down during this first one.

Body:  Feels kind of good to be moving again

Body:  Hmmm...jump rope.  Little more challenging.  I'm feeling more winded than normal.

Mind:  It's kind of bad...but a little bit nice.  I think I've been oxygen deprived with all that snot in the head.
Still, I think that's probably enough for today...  Wanna watch something on Netflix?

Body:  Maybe when we're done.

Mind:  Or...maybe now instead?

Body:  Be quiet.

Mind and Body:  (For once in agreement)  Holy  @#!$ %#@ !!!  Not.......BURPEES!!!!!!!
Noooooooooooooooo!!!!
