May 14, 2020 - 244 - "I Miss Social Nearness-ing"

The Power of Touch

I saw this photo in the PicMonkey stock photos section.  It wasn't just the festive mood of the picture that grabbed me.  It was that they're all standing so close together!

It suddenly made me miss people.  I'm feeling really bad for extroverts.  I mean, if I'm missing human interaction, they must be going crazy.

Is this the new porn?
Doesn't Human Proximity look wonderful?!?

Being on the plane is loaded with interaction and touching.  I mean...passing someone in the aisle looks like some odd game of limbo meets that party game where you pass an orange from under your chin to the next person in line without using hands.  But there's also a lot of intentional touch:  holding babies, holding the hands of an older person to help steady them, or help them get into a wheelchair, shaking hands with pilots, or passengers you meet along the way.   And loads of touching someone's shoulder, or patting their hand to get their attention, or show concern, or calm someone's nerves...

Now I'm wondering if we'll ever do that again.  What will the world be like post-Covid-19?

Daily Hits of Happy

Today my hits came from these sweet photos of friends, family, and fellow-travelers being gathered all together in close proximity.

Scanning through pictures I was surprised how odd these pictures looked.  Odd, but oh-so-sweet and reassuring.

Okay, well maybe brothers aren't
as likely to get into public smooching.

"The human touch is that little snippet of physical affection that brings a bit of comfort, support, and kindness.  It doesn't take much from the one who gives it, but can make a huge difference in the one who receives it."

"The first sense to ignite, touch is the last to burn out:  long after our eyes betray us, our hands remain faithful to the world."
