May 15, 2020 - 245 - "Forward Facing"

Confused

Michael:  Jerry Stiller died.  He was 92.

Me:  That's so sad.  We were just watching that show about people over 90 with his son in it.

Michael:  (Looking confused.). Are you talking about Jerry Seinfeld?

Me:  Oh.  Yeah.  I was.  But, I know that Stiller and Meara were Ben Stiller's parents.  I was
              confused.

Michael:  I thought you were practicing your comedy, like from that book you're reading.

Me:  No,  I guess I was practicing my, uh...senility.

Looking to the Future

The documentary I was talking about was called "If You're Not in the Obit, Eat Breakfast."  The premise of the show comes from Carl Reiner, who says:

"Every morning before having breakfast, I pick up my newspaper, get the obituary section and see if I'm listed.  If I'm not, I'll have my breakfast."  There are interviews with loads of people who are not just living into their 90's, but thriving.

The idea was to see what factors contribute to a long and active life.

It's very inspirational.  One of my favorite interviews is with Dick Van Dyke, who's just absolutely charming and hilarious, and active, a fantastic dancer...and still a very nice looking fellow.

There were lots of ideas on genes, diet, exercise, etc.

What struck me was that the people who were still alive and kickin'...were ALIVE AND KICKIN'.  They were busy.  Making plans for the future.  Interested in learning new things.  Trying new things.

They had an appreciation of their past.  But took an optimistic delight in asking the question:  What's next?!

Daily Hits of Happy

-Sitting down at my mom's desk.  She tells me over the phone exactly how to keep up with their financial and medical record-keeping.  Her clarity is breathtaking.

After all these years, I now see why being a mom was tough for her.  Her talents were wasted.

She should have been the CEO of some international conglomerate.  And I am just feeling happy and lucky that my mom is still here, sharp as a tack, and amazing me with her abilities.

-Hanging out with my dad as we explore the ins and outs of his new Apple Watch.   He jokes that he'd like to hire a 10-year-old to follow him around and help him with his computer and phone issues, since they understand technology so much better.

But the truth is, my dad looks for challenges and jumps in with both feet.
