May 26, 2020 - 256 - "One Car Woman? - Part II"

Car Heaven

...so I've spent 17 years zipping around in the fun-est little sports car ever made.

And never once in all these years, as I'd approach my car in a parking garage...or my own garage for that matter, did  I wish I'd gotten a different car...or even a different color.

Nope.  I always g0t a little pep in my step and thought:  That right there is the cutest,
sweetest, ride in all of the universe!

So Reliable...and yet...

I have had very little work done on the car.  I get the oil changed...and buy new tires once every decade whether they need it or not.  (Did I tell you that story?  Ooops.)  I've had brake pads replaced, and some sort of gasket thingie done.   Some transmission work done too.

None of it has been very expensive.

But recently I started having problems with the air conditioner.  I was told that replacing it would be expensive.  I wondered if it was smart to put money into a 17-year-old car.

That's when I started noticing the little dings and scratches in the paint job and seats.  The ones in the seats are certainly not the fault of the car.  It's the way I use it for tasks it wasn't exactly intended for:

This, clearly, is why I never have a problem having a two-seater.  I just pretend it's a truck if a truck is what's needed in the moment.

There really haven't been that many times I needed to take lots of passengers.  If I need to drive a group, I've always just traded cars with Michael for the day...and he likes to drive my cute little car anyhow.

(Funny story:  My stepson lived with us full time for a while going to college.  He's about 6'2.  Whenever we'd start to go to dinner I'd offer to drive and he'd say:  I call trunk!)

Looking For A Car That I'd Like As Much As What I Already Have

Anyway, because of the a/c problems I started thinking that maybe it was time to get a new car.

I've kept an eye out for the past few years and the only cars that ever turned my head were a) a Tesla I followed on my way to work one day, and b) a cute sporty car I saw in Dallas once...that turned out to be a Bentley.

The only cars that I ever liked (that were actually in the same stratosphere of what I'd want to pay for a car) were, you guessed it:  Miatas!

A few weeks ago, on a Sunday when the dealerships were closed, (the better for social distancing (necessary now) and salesman-distancing (needed always).   Michael said he'd seen the new Miata in a pretty red.  I'd looked online and also thought it was pretty.

I thought, after all these years of safe and sane driving...maybe I could get a red car.

We hunted around the lot...then I rounded a corner and saw it!

My first thought was:  WOW!  That's so pretty!

I had researched how much it cost with all the things I wanted on it.  I'd dreamed of all that great Bluetooth technology...not to mention an a/c that actually c's the a.

And I thought.  Tomorrow morning...I'm gonna come and get this!

But then I kept walking around it.  And around it.  And, even looking at ones with the ragtop like I wanted...they just don't look the same.  They've completely changed the body shape.

And, instead of cute and fun...it looks kind of tough and mean.  It looks like a guy's car to me.  Like a testosterone-mobile, instead of a classic, zippy, roadster.

And, really, would I get tired of that red?

And, they are not cheap cars new.  And the 2019's didn't have all the things I wanted...and is it the best time to invest in a car in the middle of a pandemic when I'm on a leave of absence from my job?...

If I'd LOVED it:  yes.  It would have been worth it.

But we got home and the garage door went up and I thought:  I want a car that looks like that one!!

Recalculating

So, instead, I got the a/c fixed and put in a new stereo.  Michael got it detailed for me...and it feels pretty dang new.  I think I'll get a little scratch and dent repair done, and get the seats recovered.  And then I'll just see how long I can continue to drive it.

Because, it turns out, I still think it's the cutest car on the road.

Daily Hits of Happy

-A neighbor of my parents recommended someone who can help clean their house.  She came today and Dad thinks my mom might not be too annoyed by her.
-I'm really liking this week's keto meal plan.
-Michael just called and I'm about to hit 'Publish' on this post...sweet!
