I Hear Azerbaijan is Lovely This Time of Year
Have you ever thought: "I really want to go to Azerbaijan!"?
Yeah. Me either.
That's until I heard of this must-see destination: The Azerbaijan Carpet Museum!
You can bet your Berber it's on my bucket list now.
(Thank you to Kim W. for telling me about this! Kim’s a fellow connoisseur of Loud and Ugly carpets from way back. Thanks for sharing this mecca of carpet with me!)
Carpet Obsessed: The Bad and The Ugly
For anyone not familiar with my obsession with carpet, you can check out the blog link way down this page on the right somewhere. (That should kick up some virtual internet dust! It's a corner of the world wide web that has been sadly neglected since I started focusing on these posts.)
That blog focuses on the ugly side of floor coverings.
I created it as a reaction to spending a lot of time in hotels and seeing a lot of loud, ugly, carpet all around the world. (Hence the clever name: Loud Ugly Carpets of the World.).
The blog focuses on the 'cover-the-spots'-in-hotel-hallways sorts of choices. They mostly involve a lot of colors and a lot of pattern.
Loud colors and random patterns are king when it comes to covering up the even-less-pleasant patterns of puke, wear patterns, and spill stains.

But The Carpet Museums Focuses on: The Good
I almost don't need to see inside this building. I mean: Wow! The whole building is shaped like a rolled up carpet! How cool is that? (Very!!!)
I suspect the carpets in this museum tend more toward the beautiful and artful, than the loud and ugly.
Displays of hand made carpets in the museum. |
I keep having visions of some unsuspecting Azerbaijani, raised with a healthy respect for art and beauty of carpets, visiting a Las Vegas casino and wondering where it all went wrong in the Once-Wonderful World of Carpet.
The Next Time Your Travels Take You to Azerbaijan...
Maybe it's because I can't go anywhere right now but I spent quite a bit of time on Google Maps 'wandering' the streets of Baku. (Virtually.)
It was very inviting. I don't know what I thought Azerbaijan would be like...but this was prettier than I would have expected. There were tons of great things to do and lots of appealing restaurants and cafes with beautiful views... (As if it needed any other draw than a building that looks like a rolled up carpet!)

Carpe(t) Diem!, y'all!
