August 25, 2020 - 347 - "Staging Your Disaster Area"

A Working Happy Hour

Michael and I just love working on our own projects during the day, then about 6 or 7 o'clock one of us declares Happy Hour.  Then, theoretically, the work stops and the evening begins.

That's when we talk about or show each other what we got done in our day.

Right now we have the added bonus of seeing what the construction workers have gotten done on the house.  So we 'walk the 40'.  (As in; the back 40 acres of a farm.). We check out all the new changes and imagine what will happen next.

Yesterday we were going to sit on the rooftop and watch the sunset and admire the new tile that got laid on the casita rooftop.  As so often happens...we ended up doing more 'doing' than sitting.

Can't Sit Still

Rodrigo, a very talented tile and masonry guy, put in a little bar under the stairs to the casita roof, then skimmed it with white cement.  We love how it’s turned out; so smooth and pretty.

Michael said he'd put a chair under the stairs to get out of the sun when he was talking to a friend on the phone in the afternoon  - said it was a nice spot to sit.

Let The Staging Begin

So he got a chair and moved it to show me.

What if?...

So then I wondered what it would look like with cushions?

Michael fished in our not-yet-finished cushion closet for some, and put them on the chair.

    It looked great.

Sure, the cute chair-and-cushion combo was surrounded by raw brick and cement.  But that was just a detail.  Suddenly, if we squinted just a tiny bit, we could start to see what a beautiful spot it was going to be.

Couldn't Stop

Michael suggested that a plant might look nice by the 'bar'.

I got up and drug a yellow and green variegated bush to see how that would look.  We loved it.

Then we remembered we'd planned to eventually have pots along the stairs.

....so I tugged at piles of pots, finally got them pulled apart, uprooted the communities of miniature crickets that were living there and lined up a few pots by the stairs.

Then we turned on lights in the unfinished rooms behind the bar, moved plants and a bench to the wall by where we were sitting,  deadheaded some geraniums, threw some debris away, swept and tidied a little, rearranged some more things...

And the next thing we knew the ice in our drinks was half-melted.  We’d forgotten to stop all that sprucing up.

We had to re-declare happy hour and sit down and admire our handiwork.

...and imagine the next phase, and the one after that.  We talked about how great it will be to have an ice bucket, and snacks, and friends to enjoy the beautiful setting.

---

Sadly, right now, the hardest part to imagine is having a rooftop full of friends mingling.  Not sure when that will be a possibility again.

     Still, we can picture it...

"A recent survey conducted by Coldwell Banker Real Estate Corp. concluded that staged homes sell for more than 6% above asking price, and often only spend half as much time on the market as non-staged homes.  In some cases, buyers don't even notice major property flaws when a home is well staged."

(Do you think all our cute-ifying would keep someone from noticing that there's no rail on the stairs?  ...or tile, or paint on the walls, or...)
