August 7, 2020 - 329 - "Being Happy In My Lane"

Minding My Own Business

I just love the phrase:  'Stay in your lane.'

I usually used to hear it at work a lot in conversation with new-hires.

      They'd tell a story like:

"So this girl at the wedding was all mad that the bride had ice cream instead of cake, and I said:  "Whoa, sister, stay in your lane. When it's your wedding, you can have whatever you want."

Or:  "I was going to tell that passenger he needs to stop letting his toddler run up and down the aisle because someone's going to get hurt...but then I figured I'd better just stay in my lane.  It's not my kid."

I love the hands-off approach to life when it comes to other people's choices.   It all boils down to minding your own business.  This is, of course, always easier said than done.

My Business is Deciding What I Want and Consistently Going For It

So, here I am, happily tooling along in my lane, trying to do the next thing that feels right for me.

...and trying my best to let everyone else do the same thing by Staying In My Lane.

"Our help is usually not very helpful.

Our help is often toxic.

And help is the sunny side of control.  Stop helping so much.

Don't get your help and goodness all over everybody."

-Anne Lamott

"The good guys in my movies mind their own business, and they don't judge other people.

And the bad guys are jealous; they judge other people without knowing the whole story.  They want all the attention, and they're mean spirited."

-John Waters

"I was having a nice anonymous little time as a writer.

I really was on the writer path.

I was sort of minding my own business.

I loved making a living in music."
