Ways to Stay Sane in Insane Times

Disclaimer:  Anyone who knows me will realize that this is more joke than Public Service Announcement.

    It's bound to be some kind of nutty mix-up of the adages:
        -"Do as I say, not as I do" and
        -"We teach best what we most need to learn"...

A Few Fun Ideas

   I'll leave the pursuit of sanity out of this for the moment and just say that these things make me feel a little happier, a little calmer, a little more focused...

     1-Limit Your Consumption of News- Aim for Quality Entertainment

            Avoid the news...like the plague!  (ha ha ha)

      Two things that have really messed with our sense of what's healthy and normal are the advent of: 24-hour news, and "reality" TV.

               No News Is Good News*:  New 'news' is not available once per hour.  Don't check in over and over and over again...waiting for that next promised film clip of the catastrophe, or 'briefing' from...anyone.  Turn it off.  Step away from the TV.  Read a reputable online news source once a day, or even once a week.  How much of it really changes what you're going to do right now?  Let it go.  You'll feel better.  

               I am more on the 'once a millennium' news cycle at this point, but I'm lucky to live with a news junkie so if anything really big happens I know that he will tell me.  
           
               Don't Watch People You Wouldn't Talk to In Real Life Doing Things You'd Tell Your Kids Not to Do Watch programs with real plots, and real writers.  A little positivity wouldn't hurt either.  
              
               *But if you must watch the news try adding that old fortune cookie trick to the ritual.  End every headline you hear with:  Between the Sheets.

                        Ex.  "Australian Bushfires Out of Control!" (between the sheets)
                                "Assassination of Iranian General, Qasem Soleimani!  (He was between the sheets!)
        
                 Can you tell I wrote this some months back?

      2-Make a Schedule

                 -Have a plan, even if it's just what to cook for dinner.   Make a list of things you want to do.  Put the list in a visible place.  Mark off tasks as you get them done.  Put fun stuff on there too.  

        3-Socialize

                 -FaceTime and Zoom Chats are actually very entertaining...and if you just sit at a desk...you don't even have to put on pants!

          4-Get A Move On

                  -Exercise:  It's a thing.  Yep.  I doubted it too, but I have learned from personal experience it makes you feel a whole lot better about everything.  Just take a walk around the block.  (Steer clear of anyone else taking a walk around the block, of course.) 

                   You'll be glad you did.

         5-Sing.  Sing a Song.  

                 ...Sing out loud.  Sing out strong!  Don't worry that it's not good enough, for anyone else to hear.  Just sing.  Sing a song!   Go to YouTube and search for a favorite song, followed by the word 'karaoke'...then belt it out, baby.

Daily Hits of Happy

     -Exciting news on the job-front for a family member in a creative industry,  This makes me insanely happy.
     -Dreamt same family member had a baby boy.  Though probably not happening anytime soon, due to this pandemic madness - the mere thought also makes me very, very, happy.
     -There's a cool gate in our back yard...not leaning against a fence...but actually installed.  Squeeee!
