July 4, 2020 - 295 - "Addicted to Technology"

When Your Habits Become Visible

Say you're told that the power will be out on your street all afternoon.

You start noticing how many times you walk into a room and flip the lightswitch.  You don't even know you're doing it. Not until you're doing it over and over again, knowing full well it won't work.

You decide to charge your phone, run a load of wash, heat something in the microwave...and you're halfway through the process before you remember, yet again, that it won't work. You start feeling claustrophobic over all of the things that are suddenly not an option.

I start noticing how much I "ask Alexa" things when I'm home...when I'm in a hotel room and want to ask her what the weather's like outside, or get her to play some music...

You Realize You Want Everything to Be a Smart Device

Conversation the other day at our house:

Me:  I can't find my notebook.
Michael:  Do you want me to call it?
Me:  It's funny that you say that. I wanted to ask Alexa to do just that.

Latest Genius Inventor Idea:

A bookmark that will beep when you ask your smart home/assistant device to call it.

It could also be great to have one that can find your drink at a party.

It wouldn't be a bad plan to have one on Ella's collar.   (Boy, would she ever hate that!)

You could attach it to your kid or aging parent too.  Just sayin'...

P.S. Though it doesn't feel like it's a holiday at all...

Happy 4th of July everyone!
