July 1, 2020 - 292 - "Neanderthal Brain vs. Modern Reality"

Caveman Diet

I don't think the average caveman's diet looked anything like the paleo, low-carb, or Type O diets of today.

I think it looked more like...

Whatever the hell they could find to eat.

A Theory Backed By Science

I know this through my own personal exhaustive scientific study.

I have discovered that it doesn't matter how much I learn about what makes up a healthy diet, my body wants whatever it can get my hands on.  It wants fast calories, it wants lots of them, and it wants them now.

Diet of Choice

We are genetically predisposed to want sugar and fat, fat, and sugar.

It may not be what's best for us in any kind of long term way, or even a short term way,...but our bodies have multi-millennia of evolution telling it what to do.  And it all adds up to surviving famines and outlasting the tiger pacing back and forth outside the cave.  If we ate a good part of a water buffalo this morning...we can probably out-wait the tiger.

My Neanderthal brain and body don't care that I want my arteries to stay clear.  They don't care that I've got a bathing suit-wearing activity on the horizon.  They don't care that I want to live to see our grandkids get married and have kids of their own.

Nope.  My anciently formed body and brain want whatever's in front of me, or worst-case scenario:  whatever I can get my hands on quick.

Not Completely Evolutionarily Stunted

I have evolved only very slightly from my ancestors.

If asked at any given moment what I'd most like to eat, I would request food that that cave (wo)men (bless their poor benighted souls) wouldn't know to ask for.

Yep.  I'd pick pie and ice cream 9 times out of every 10.

Daily Hits of Happy

-The mere thought of pie makes me happy
-It's hot as the day goes on...but still cool enough to sit on the patio in the morning
-A little time in the hot tub in the evening and I sleep like a baby at night
